What Is Periodontal Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious condition that can lead to pain, bleeding gums, and tooth loss if left untreated. It is caused by tissue near the teeth becoming infected by bacteria. The tissue can become inflamed and painful. When the teeth are exposed to bacteria, they develop barriers of plaque, which are difficult to clean.

You may also be prescribed a topical or oral antibiotic to treat bacterial infections.
Preventing Periodontal Disease
While periodontal disease can lead to severe complications, it’s actually relatively easy to prevent disorder. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day or after every meal, if possible. Diet changes may also help: try to avoid eating too many sticky or sugary foods.
You should also visit your dentist once every six months for a professional teeth cleaning and thorough oral check-up. Your dentist will make sure that you are not in danger of developing gum disease.
