What is it?
Very few people maintain perfect teeth throughout their lifetime. At some point, most of us will need restorations to repair decayed, fractured, or damaged teeth. CEREC is a method that can be used not only to replace failing fillings, but also restore teeth that have become decayed, weak, or broken. The best part is that this is done with all ceramic materials which have a more natural appearance and tend to bond with the teeth better than metal fillings.
How does it work?
The first step in the CEREC treatment is for Dr. Moore to examine your tooth and decide on an appropriate treatment. In some cases, a simple filling may be all that is needed. In other cases, a brand new crown might be required. It all depends on how damaged the structure has become. Then, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area and reduce discomfort during the preparation of your tooth.
The next step is to take an optical impression of the tooth. Instead of making you bite into a putty like material and waiting for it to harden, CEREC uses a camera to take a digital impression of your tooth. This step lasts only a minute or two.
Finally, Dr. Moore will use the CEREC machine to create your restoration piece. This machine utilizes 3D software to create a virtual model of your tooth by using the digital impression as a guide. Within just a few minutes, the data is sent to a milling machine within the office where the restoration is created. About 10 to 20 minutes later, you will have a customized restoration piece ready to be used immediately.
